Get Ahead of Electrical Outages

Avoiding power outages and electrical injury is important for any business, but it’s especially true for mission-critical data centers and other companies that absolutely depend on a reliable power source. Here are some suggestions for spotting potential problems before they become much bigger ones:

Examine your need for lightning protection. Depending on your facility’s size, shape and location, it may be a target for summer lightning storms. If your building needs lightning protection, consider having a lightning protection system designed and installed. Be sure to get it UL-certified.

Scan electrical wiring for hot spots. Loose connections can cause heat buildups that eventually may cause power outages. The best way to detect these impaired connections while they are still energized is with infrared thermography. “Baker Group has both the technology and trained personnel to predict – and prevent – problems later on,” says Mark Ohlinger of Baker Group’s Electrical Business Unit.

Minimize the risk of arc flashes. An arc flash – an electrical fault that can produce temperatures hotter than the sun’s surface – can cause death, business disruption, legal liability, increased insurance premiums and regulatory fines. To reduce the risk of injury and business disruption due to arc flashes, OSHA requires that stickers or labels be placed on electrical equipment warning people of specific dangers for that particular equipment, per the National Fire Protection Agency’s (NFPA) 70E arc flash safety standard.
