Warning! Live Power Behind This Panel

Warning! Live Power Behind This Panel
09.15.2017

In commercial and industrial settings, electrical panels like this one are frequently turned off and on for equipment maintenance. Occasionally, it may be necessary to open the panel to check for bad switch knives, terminals and fuses. However, just because the switch is turned off on the outside does not mean there is no live power on the inside – opening this panel and reaching inside this box could cause electrocution and death.

Ryan English, Service Operations Manager at Baker Group, says, “Even when the switch is off, there’s no way of knowing whether this panel is energized without checking it with a meter. That requires a voltage reading and confirmation that power is off by an individual who is properly trained and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).”

Boxes like these are required to carry a warning label with arc flash hazard analysis. “But even when those exist, it’s so easy to see ‘OFF’ and assume it’s safe to go inside. It’s not safe,” English stresses.

This electrocution risk also applies at home. English says, “Even though a light switch may be turned off, there is live power coming in behind the switch plate. Opening and touching it could be extremely dangerous. Whenever you’re dealing with electricity, be very aware of your surroundings.  When in doubt, call a professional.”
