Ziegler Cat had purchased land near I-80 and was committed to building new facilities large enough to house corporate office space, equipment rental store, parts warehouse, and service bays large enough to service over-the-road trucks and some of Caterpillar’s largest earth moving equipment. The needs of this unique business would require very special mechanical skills.

The variety of spaces required unique HVAC solutions. The facility included a wide variety of HVAC solutions; modular air handling units with variable air volume systems for office and rental show room areas, single zone roof top units for parts warehouse areas, gas fired radiant heat for high bay service areas. Hot water boilers were used to provide perimeter heat and VAV box reheat capabilities. Gas fired air handling units were also used in shop areas to make-up fresh air where exhaust was being removed.

All of these individual heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems have specialty temperature control needs. Baker Group’s ability to bring Direct Digital Control Systems to the project proved to be another advantage. Connecting all of these systems on a single building automation system was a challenge. Invensys Intelligent Automation (I/A), with its internet accessibility features was the right solution. Not only does this system control the building’s temperature and energy efficiency, it allows Ziegler’s maintenance personnel to access this system and make changes from anywhere in the world.
