For more than a decade, Baker Group has offered a robust intern program that offers students an immersive experience working in one of the Midwest’s premier specialty contractors. In 2021, 18 interns joined the Baker Group, adding a dose of youthful exuberance while gaining hands-on experience in the construction industry, learning more about the diverse Baker Group business units, and solidifying and expanding their skills.

The 2021 group is the largest Baker Group has ever had, and its members left a lasting impression.

“This was a stellar group of interns that showed from Day 1 that they possess a tremendous amount of talent,” says Dave Brown, Baker Group’s Human Resources Recruiter, who helped manage the intern program this year. “It’s awesome to see what they bring to the program. They learned from us, and we learned from them. Each of them brought an energy to their work that was notable, and we were impressed with the level of knowledge they were able to absorb and process.”

Baker Group hosts its intern program from June through August each year. The program offers an opportunity for college students in a broad range of major programs to get an up-close view of how a contractor like Baker Group operates. In addition, the interns are provided several opportunities to experience the Baker Group culture, including YURtern events, Breakfast with BJ, service projects, social events for employees, a luncheon on business etiquette, and much more.

“This is one of the best intern programs I have participated in,” says Elijah Ralston, who completed an internship in the Mechanical business unit. “I feel prepared for numerous jobs going forward. Baker Group has a great culture and I especially appreciate that it is an employee-owned organization.”

In addition to learning, the 2021 interns had plenty of opportunities to share.

“Each of the interns worked on special projects in their area of expertise, providing a fresh perspective and different point of view in the business units they were working in,” says Russ Acton, who is a former intern himself and currently a Sheet Metal Project Manager. “They blew us away with their buy-in to Baker Group. They took responsibility in their positions and lived out our core values.”

“We can’t thank them enough,” Acton continues. “This year’s Baker Group Internship Program was our best summer yet. I am truly impressed with every single one the interns we were fortunate enough to bring onto the team. Their futures are bright.”
