BAE Cedar Rapids Facility

Delivering BAE Comprehensive Automation Solutions

Looking for an experienced automation contractor that could meet an aggressive timeline, BAE Systems turned to Baker Group. With a new facility being built in Cedar Rapids, the global leader in defense, security, and aerospace manufacturing found everything it needed right in its backyard.

Baker Group has played a central role in the relocation from Coralville, beginning with the initial design phase and continuing through to the ongoing support of BAE’s day-to-day operations.

The project has encompassed various aspects of mechanical engineering, controls, and automation. The initial challenge was the accelerated timeline BAE faced to commence production.

"There was a quick timeline. They had to get to production," says Colin Berryman, Automation Project Manager in Baker Group’s Cedar Rapids office. “This urgency demanded agility in the design and implementation of mechanical systems. With so many experts under one roof, this is something that Baker Group excels at.”

Despite the challenges posed by the dynamic designs the project demanded, the Baker Group team was able to navigate the intricacies of the project without delay.

Baker Group’s involvement accelerated in the post-construction phase. With the BAE Cedar Rapids facility specializing in complex manufacturing processes, primarily focusing on chips and chipsets, it was vital that Baker Group’s systems could ensure a stable and suitable environment for these mission-critical operations.

“We enjoy the challenge presented in designing, installing and maintaining such vital automation solutions,” Berryman says. “For BAE specifically, our work included installing real-time monitoring, so they could track and manage essential parameters, including temperature and humidity. This not only aids in maintaining optimal manufacturing conditions but also aligns with stringent government testing requirements.”

The success of the collaboration is grounded in the expertise Baker Group brought to the table. With a team that boasts decades of experience in automation, mechanical engineering, and electrical systems, Baker Group has become an indispensable partner for BAE.

“We look at this as just the beginning of our relationship with BAE,” Berryman says. “We are committed to providing ongoing support and identifying areas for improvement. We are ready to work with the team at BAE to manage, identify and deploy automation solutions the deliver efficiency, reliability, and adaptability in the always evolving advanced manufacturing landscape.”
