Iowa Law Enforcement Academy

Baker Group worked with The Iowa Department of Administrative Services to add anew interior electrical system, a new generator, data capabilities, emergency phone system, security and fire alarm system to the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. The client’s goal was to bring the existing building up to current code and create more
comfortable spaces within the building.

Creative solutions allow for greater space and contain costs
This project presented some spacing and layout challenges that Baker Group worked to overcome with creative solutions. The first challenge was thelow ceiling height in the building and the concrete flooring. Baker Group sourced specialty low-profile LED lighting that would fit in the existing ceilings and used a combination of direct/indirect and cove lighting. Baker Group also removed the concrete flooring, allowing for electrical conduit to be run under the floor for power distribution. This change allowed for valuable ceiling space to be freed up.

The second challenge was reworking the data distribution in the building. Baker Group took the design plans and flipped the electrical room and IT rooms around. This allowed for the IT rooms to be stacked over each other which helped with data distribution.

Pre-planning allows for building to keep power throughout the remodel
While working on the project, Baker Group created a temporary power plan to keep power on in the building while installing the new power grid system. The new system installed was a 2000 amp service with new panel distribution. An existing generator was also utilized and integrated into two new automatic transfer switches for a life safety power distribution network.
