Iowa State University Gerdin Expansion
Baker Group worked with Iowa State University on the award-winning expansion project of the Gerdin Business Building. Iowa State had a set budget and competing design-build teams were tasked with presenting ideas of what they could accomplish within the parameters of the budget. Selection was based off which team could bring the best value for the presented budget. Baker Group was part of the winning team that was able to meet the needs of the bridging documents, and the business college received a five level multi-story addition with the required offices and classrooms to meet the demand of the growing student population.
Strong Collaboration Produces Optimal Results
This project presented some challenges that Baker Group worked to overcome with creative solutions. The first challenge was limited and restrictive access to the job site that was connected to an existing occupied multi-story building and limited street access and classes being in session during most of the project. Baker Group carefully coordinated deliveries with the project team to utilize the crane and maintain the flow of materials into the building for all trades. Deliveries had to be scheduled on a daily basis with all trades so not to impede traffic and other workers. Baker Group used their state-of-the-art technology to digitally scan and detail mechanical piping and ductwork systems to efficiently connect to existing mechanical systems as well as optimize aesthetics in new construction that matches building design. Baker Group’s Advanced Manufacturing Facility was pivotal in allowing to fabricate the majority of piping systems and duct systems for on-time deliveries and to keep the jobsite clear of our materials.
Unprecedented Challenges Met with Thoughtful Plans of Action
Another challenge is that this project is being completed during the COVID 19 crisis. Baker Group implemented a daily check-in procedure for the project to screen employees, subcontractors, and vendors to assist in preventing any exposure to the jobsite. Also, the project team implemented the use of face masks and face shields for added protection.
This building system includes a separate air handling unit with chilled water and steam coils to provide optimum comfort for the classroom environment. University utilities were extended into this addition to utilize the campus central plant systems. Multiple VAV boxes with hot water reheat coils provide optimum climate control for building occupants.
