Stewart Memorial Hospital Remodel

Stewart Memorial hospital is a critical access hospital in Lake City, IA. Baker Group will be helping with the undergoing a major addition and renovation as part of this project. The addition consists of an emergency department including ambulance bay, and a new freestanding maintenance building. There is also an addition for a new loading dock and laundry department. The renovation touches almost all the remaining building, including but not limited to imaging, fitness, cafeteria, mechanical rooms, etc.

All systems are being improved/updated for this project. From your typical domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, to high- and low-pressure steam, medical gases, acid drain waste and vent. New major equipment to support the building includes five air handlers, two air cooled chillers, medical vacuum pump skid, several pumps, heat exchangers, fans, etc.

There were two main challenges that were faced during the duration of this project. The first main challenge was being able to maintain patient care while undergoing construction. Baker Group collaborated with the design and construction team to determine the best phasing plan to accommodate construction but will allow for continued use of the building. With the next challenge that was brought up, Baker Group identified and worked to locate personnel that live closer to the jobsite and utilized all the resources to staff the project with the right leader, foreman and crew.
